Story
We're just a couple of housemates in Melbourne Australia who are sick of the plastic pollution that pervades our world. We know that much of it ends up in the ocean and threatens marine ecosystems, so we both try to avoid plastic if possible. But despite our best efforts, we still take our bins out every week in dismay at how much plastic ends up in them. We had signed up for "I Refuse to Single Use", a boycott of all single-use plastics in May 2021 to raise awareness and reduce plastic use, and support the Great Barrier Reef Foundation. Unfortunately the event was cancelled, but we had already gotten excited and are doing it anyway!
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on Earth, with rich corals spanning an area larger than New Zealand and visible from space. The Reef is a unique ecosystem; home to thousands of species of marine life, including fish, whales, dolphins, and six of the world’s seven species of marine turtle. The Reef is an irreplaceable global icon. But our Reef is under increasing pressure from a growing combination of threats such as climate change, plastic and other pollution, and ocean acidification.
You can follow our plastic free journey, and donate to join the effort to save the Great Barrier Reef.
