Story
Have you ever wondered what the world would be like without iconic animals like rhino? How will future generations judge us in terms of protecting our natural heritage if we can’t even protect one of the largest species on earth? My name is Pip Myram and I am passionate about rhinos, some have even said a little too much as I am often referred to as the "crazy rhino lady" in my work place. This crazy rhino lady really needs your help to run the London Marathon in 2018…
My current job entails monitoring a population of White Rhino in a protected area of South Africa, and I have become a little obsessed with these amazing creatures and feel extremely privileged to work with them on a daily basis.
So why the London Marathon? My personal challenge is to create awareness and funding for genuine rhino conservation projects around the globe: having been involved in the daily monitoring and endless protection measures for rhino I wanted to be certain that I am making a difference. This is why I joined the Save The Rhino International, who operate in a number of countries providing legitimate measures for the protection of rhino.
The current stats (based on South Africa’s population) indicate rhinos are largely in decline due to the ongoing illegitimate rhino horn trade. Although the current statistics show a general decline in the number of poaching incidents, this does not take into account a shrinking population, with the death rate now exceeding the birth rate, becoming a downward trend even with the increase in apprehension and arrests. Sadly poaching is not the only contributor to the decline of rhinos, but also due to habitat loss/human expansion and political conflict. It is terrible to know that this is going on right now and it has to stop.
By sponsoring me, the crazy rhino lady, you can be sure your money is going to a good cause: there is no easy fix but it is essential to properly protect these animals with well trained and equipped wardens, secure and suitable habitat, as well as comprehensive monitoring. The people living in close proximity to rhino areas need to see and gain the benefits of conserving these animals and to educate them to see them worth more alive than dead.
