In memory of Saoirse Curtin
We're funding vital research into necrotising enterocolitis (NEC), a devastating bowel disorder that mainly strikes premature babies. Each year in the UK, hundreds of babies develop NEC and tragically, up to 35% of these babies do not survive.

Story

I'm fundraising for Action Medical Research who urgently need to raise the first £20,000 towards a vital piece of research into necrotising enterocolitis (NEC).Premature babies are among those most susceptible to this life-threatening condition, which affects up to one in 20 babies in neonatal units. It strikes rapidly and babies need urgent treatment. Tragically, in many cases once NEC is identified it can already be too late.

Our Daughter Saoirse was born in 2016 but despite an initial positive prognosis, she sadly died at just 5 days old as a result of NEC. She is not the only one in a similar situation this happens too often and no enough is known yet to spot the signs early and treat the illness in time to prevent death or further complications.

More research is needed to stop necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) developing in the first place. The research Action is funding into NEC is studying certain types of factors within breast milk to understand their role in protecting babies from harm. The vital research could shed new light on ways to help protect preterm babies from NEC.

Money donated for my walking will go directly to funding more research into NEC and hopefully stop other families having to experience what we and other families have.

Thank you xx
