Story

Hi,

Thank you for following this link and thinking about sponsoring me!

In Ghana, volunteering in the Cape Coast hospital I came across several cases of malnutrition, you may remember this from my facebook blog:

There are two retroviral cases both suffering from malnutrition. One infant looks about 1 month old yet has a full set of milk teeth making him nearly 18 months. He is very small and skinny. In the body’s attempt to conserve energy their skin has stopped growing normally, making raw skin legions which look like severe burns. The older of the two who is perhaps 8 years old was unable to sit up or cooperate with the doctor at all on Thursday, yet within a few days she was more active and chatting away. They are being fed very small quantities of a substance with a high calorie content so as not to overload their systems. The plan is to gradually increase the quantities in their diet until they can cope with normal portions of food, which appears to be working as they seem to gather more strength every day.

In the following blog I wrote...

The change in one of the malnutrition cases was remarkable. When I saw her last week she was unaware of anything happening around her. Whereas this week she was sitting up, smiling at me and talking with the doctor. All the staff where in high spirits, taking photos because she had been such a severe case: the atmosphere was infectious.

Her name was Judith and she was lucky. The 18 month boy died.

Starting on Sunday 16th October (world food day) I am going to have a sponsored fast to raise money to send sachets of high-calorie vitamin-rich food to save other malourished children like Judith.

The 30 hour starved for attention famine is with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) charity. Please see the following links if you'd like to know more; http://www.starvedforattention.org/ and http://www.msf.org.uk/

Please donate and help me to make a difference!

Love

Phoebe
