Story
Like a lot of people last year I didn’t know the last time I saw my Grandpa that it really would be the last time.
We lived close and, although he had dementia meaning he remembered us a little less each time he came, he would still come visit each weekend. He did not remember that his legs hadn’t enough strength each time he got up causing a lot of falls. He had to live in a care home.
The pandemic changed everything, and soon there were lockdowns and social distancing to contend with. It all happened astonishingly quickly. May came and the care home was covid free but the next thing we knew he’d got it, and sadly died soon after.
It’s been a year since that point, one that has passed too quickly and too slow all at once. With the stress of a pandemic, exams and other losses, I wanted to do something to remember him.
I’ve grown up going down to Dover, and I’ve always wanted to do an English Channel relay- swimming is so mindful it’s perfect for taking some time away from the world to remember him and my Grandma.
Dementia had such a big impact on his life, and so many others, which is why I chose it as a charity, I really believe we can make a difference.
