Story
On September 26th 2020 I will be going for the World Record for the total amount of ascent and descent on foot (greatest vertical distance uphill and downhill) in 24 hours.
The attempt has been verified and approved by the Guinness World Records so I am looking forward to making my way into the history books.
A bit about me
No stranger to extreme endurance events, I have previously completed the 250km Marathon Des Sables in the Sahara Desert, the 100km CCC race around Mont Blanc and the South Downs Way 100 mile race to name just a few. I suffered a fractured pelvis after being involved in a road accident in September 2016, in which I was thrown from the back of a motorcycle. Despite this, I was able to run a marathon on the December of that year.
Whilst this event is much closer to home, there is no doubt that it constitutes one of the toughest both in terms of physical but especially mental endurance.
Why Mind?
I will be fundraising for mental health awareness and specifically for Mind: mental health is an issue that has affected family, friends and myself. Having a challenge to focus on is an important part of my own mental health; over many endurance events I have proven to myself over and again the importance of developing resilience in coping with everyday challenges that life throws at you, pandemic or no pandemic! Mind is an extraordinary organisation that has helped so many during this difficult time so is close to my heart and central to my motivation.
Some History and My Plan
The group record for this event is over 18,000 metres (over 2 x the height of Mount Everest which is 8848m) or over 11 miles straight up or down! The minimum standard for the solo record is over 14,500 metres elevation change.
My record in numbers:
- At its steepets Cob lane has a gradient of a calf muscle-demolishing 26%
- The average gradient of Cob lane is 20%
- The elevation difference of Cob Lane is 58m
- I plan to ascend and descend 153 times
- Total vertical distance covered (ascent and descent) will be 17,748m or 2 x the height of Everest
- The road section I will be running is 340m long (680m per ascent and descent)
- The total distance I will cover by running/walking/crawling will be 108.8 km
- I have 24 hours in which to complete the record attempt
- I will burn approximately 17,500 calories
- With your help, I would like to fundraise a minimum of £15,000
Maybe my hardest challenge to date but something that has been in the pipeline for a while now!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
