Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
so here I am sitting thinking of what to write in my story when my wife says "why try getting peoples attention just tell them as it is" so here goes!!
A true friend and inspiration to me sadly lost his dear son JAMIE to a rare form of cancer at the age of just 21.Although the pain has almost never eased,in true form to his character Alwyn turned this most painful personal tragedy into one of truly, remarkable resilience raising thousands of pounds for this remarkable charity that supported Jamie and his whole family through tough times. Now its my turn to have a go and do my bit!! (with your help and generosity )
In 2016 i will be embarking on a challenge that can only be described as LIFE CHANGING,yes i agree people will think spending 12 days in a hot climate half way round the world sounds like a cop out for a fund raising challenge!! But think of it like this i will endure 8 crippling hours of walking for 5days in 35 degree heat in varying terrain(one of the worlds most active volcanoes) suffer pain and no doubt highs and lows throughout the challenge. But at the end i will be able to thank all you incredible people who helped me achive my fundraising target!! With all the money going to TEENAGE CANCER TRUST who help teenagers going through a totally different kind of pain, different highs and lows yet just hold their heads up and get on with it.Many thanks for reading and get GIVING.......
Here's the itinerary guys!!!
D1 04 NOV NICARAGUA
We have a day flight to Managua in Nicaragua. On arrival we transfer two hours to our hotel in Leon for our first night in Nicaragua. Tonight we relax in our great hotel and have a good night’s sleep in preparation for our first challenge day.
D2 05 NOV ROTA & CERRO NEGRO VOLCANOS APPROX 8-9HRS TREKKING
This morning we meet our team over breakfast for a comprehensive briefing on the challenge ahead. We transfer forty minutes to the trailhead of Rota Volcano where we trek through tropical forest to the active summit crater 1080m. After descending we lunch then climb to our second summit of Cerro Negro 726M, one of the youngest and most active volcanoes on earth. There are no trees or plants on its steep scree slopes so we have the advan- tage of uninterrupted views from the summit of volcanoes and the Pacific Ocean. We descend then trek through dense vegetation and fields to our first overnight camp at the ranger station.
D3 06 NOV EL HOYO VOLCANO & ASOSOSCA LAGOON APPROX 7-8HRS TREKKING
For our second challenge day we climb the El Hoyo Volcano 1088M with great views of a unique volcanic land- scape. On our descent we continue by foot to the beautiful Asososca Lagoon, a volcanic lake of crystalline waters in the “Pilas del Hoyo” Volcanic group where a quick dip is a real treat! We transfer 50 minutes from the end of the trek to our bush camp on Momotombo and this evening we have a camp-cooked meal under the stars and retire early for a pre-dawn start tomorrow.
D4 07 NOV MOMOTOMBO VOLCANO (1297M) APPROX 7HRS TREKKING
We wake before dawn for an early breakfast, and then set off on our summit challenge. For the first hour we walk over the steep black volcanic surface, followed by two hours on the upper slopes of the volcano arriving at Momo- tombos’ summit in time for sunrise. This is the fifth tallest volcano in the country and its near perfect volcanic shape makes it the most impressive and recognisable volcano in Nicaragua. On our return to camp we transfer 2.5 hours to the highlands of Jinotega on a route that passes stunning countryside to the Carlos Augusto private reserve where we camp.
D5 08 NOV PEÑAS BLANCAS MASSIF (1680 M) APPROX 7HRS TREKKING
After leaving camp we trek 2hrs to the Peñas Blancas Massif National Park, a large mountain on the border of the Jinotega and Matagalpa districts. This is a stunning place that few have heard of and fewer still have visited, how- ever its virgin rainforest, large waterfalls, superb viewpoints and rural communities are a wonderful addition to the challenge. Our trek today will push us much harder so after a traditional breakfast we start our climb through rain- forest to the summit. After a packed lunch we descend via the great Rainbow waterfall where we stop for a swim and then continue to arrive at camp before sunset.
D6 09 NOV CERRO DANTALI - EL DIABLO NATIONAL PARK APPROX 7HRS TREKKING
For our final trekking day we continue to the community of Corinto all the way down to the bottom of the Gobiado Hill on rough gravel trails. Otherwise known as the ‘Devil’s Path’ it leads us to the top of El Gobiado mountain and then down into the El Diablo National Park. As we get deeper into the forest we see the Matapalo and Date Palm trees along with a great variety of birds species including the Quetzal and Bell Bird, along with flocks of Howler Monkeys. We eventually arrive at the Bastilla Eco Lodge, in the heart of the mountains, to be welcomed by our team and where we can finally relax after our 5 day trek. Tonight we enjoy a celebratory meal to mark the end of an incredible challenge.
D7 10 NOV LA BASTILLA ECO LODGE
This morning at La Bastilla Eco Lodge we join in the activities of the community. This is the first rural entrepre- neurship school in Nicaragua, and all the profits generated by the Ecolodge, egg and dairy production, pig breed- ing, vegetable-growing, coffee nursery and the small bakery help make the school financially self-sufficient. After lunch we transfer for 4-5 hours back to Granada for a free last evening in this beautiful colonial town.
D8 11 NOV DEPART NICARAGUA
This morning we transfer to Managua airport for our overnight return flight to the UK.
D9 12 NOV ARRIVE UK
