Story

Having nearly died three years ago following a thorn scratch whilst out running I always said one day I would run the London Marathon in support of The UK Sepsis Trust.

Fundraising is at the heart of their fight against sepsis. They raise awareness, and spark the question: “What is sepsis? I’ve never heard of it!” In this way, fundraising can help prevent thousands of deaths. It also funds their vital support work, helping people adjust to life after sepsis, people who were less fortunate than myself.  I was lucky, it was caught in time and I was expertly looked after by the military and NHS teams at the QE Hospital Birmingham.

Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.
