Phil's Everesting British Record attempt · 7 September 2020

Founded in 1976 by children’s author Michael Morpurgo and his wife Clare, our three farms welcome 3000 children and young people from underserved communities each year, helping them to step outside of their daily lives, learn new skills, grow in confidence and be braver, stronger and more resilient.

Story

On 7 September I made a successful attempt on the British Everesting record to raise money for Farms for City Children.

The charity gives children an opportunity to learn about where their food comes from, country life and the great outdoors. And they get to do this in some fantastic locations, so different from home.
For some of these kids it's a completely new experience that teaches them so much and leaves profound and lasting memories.

Everesting is riding up and down the same hill enough times to accumulate 8848m of climbing which = the height of Mt. Everest. In 2020 it's become a phenomenon in the cycling world. Professional and keen amateur cyclists haven't been able to do much racing, and many have turned their attention to achieving world and national records for Everesting instead.

I was pleased that most of the hard work and meticulous preparation paid off, and with the exception of unforecasted rain on the day everything went perfectly to plan. I lowered the British record by 26 minutes and the world veteran record by 1hr 12mins. It may not last long though, there is still a lot of 2020 to go!
