Story
I’m at it again! This time, it’s on two feet rather than two wheels.
I’ve been doing an annual charity fund raising event every year since 2013, and the 2022 effort will be the toughest yet.
What could beat cycling almost every day in 2021? Well how about something I’ve not indulged in for nearly 40 years (at school!) , and a spot of running? And while we are at it, let’s make it a half marathon.
Mad. Well not really, because since moving to the North East two years ago, we’ve heard so much about the great guys over at Berwick Cancer Cars. This is where you find the real heroes. And lots of them.
Berwick Cancer Cars are, collectively, volunteers who ferry people back and forth by car to major city hospitals for cancer treatment appointments. That’s already very commendable, but consider that the journey is typically a round trip of 120 miles and you’ll understand why this cause is so deserving.
Cancer is an almost inevitable life event for many of us, so something like this that takes away the trauma of having to get to services so far away is a godsend. A volunteer will drive a person 60 miles to Edinburgh or the opposite way to Newcastle, wait for them to have their treatment, then bring them home again.
I’ll be doing the run in Mums name. We lost Pat 15 years ago this year to this terrible disease. And if you tell me who you would like me to run for, I’ll add their name to my training tops and you'll see that in my photo log.
My training will be difficult. I picked up a bad ankle injury last November which refuses to heal. I can just about manage 2 miles walking and running right now so I have a huge amount of work to do by event day in September, but one thing that will keep me going is the sound of donation notification messages.
So over to you, my kind family, friends and colleagues. Please give what you can and let’s see if I can beat my record of £3300 for Alzheimer’s Society back on the London to Brussels Cycle a few years back.
Thank you
