Mutton Chop Melee
"Many Londoners and Mancunians alike stood aghast at the sight that was the ‘Mutton Chop’. A style adopted by the landed Gentry of the period, rugged, and untamed, tis not the sight one would expect in the early 19th Century. Many folk of the time considered the ‘Mutton Chop’ most objectionable, indeed several gentlemen of questionable fancy were deemed foppish and steadfastly lecherous. Oft though it seems, with newness of time impending, one has to adopt and indeed adapt. Let us then applaud the pathfinders, the new breed, the Mutton Chopped Gentry. Let us celebrate their efforts by ourselves growing such fine facial hair, such quasi-beardedness that perhaps the nobility of the time, the bearded nobility no less, will look down upon us with furious envy."
(Extract from Manchester Evening News, Feb 2nd 1821)
18 Leech & Co gentlemen of the Law have grown the finest whiskers over the last 3 weeks. Now the Melee approaches and the favoured designs will be shaved in. Pictures to follow.
