Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit the JustGiving page of Peter Turnpenny.
Peter recently turned 60!
He ran the London Marathon to celebrate his 50 birthday and to celebrate this one he plans to cycle LE2JOG in 6 days! He and a consultant colleague from the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital, Dr Mike Jeffreys (Care of the Elderly), plan to set off from Land’s End in the early evening of May 17, getting as far as Redruth the first night. Less than 6 days later, in the early afternoon of Thursday May 23, the pair hope to reach John O’Groats, having cycled up to 150 miles daily.
Peter is raising money for causes which span his career.
He spent 7 years as a paediatrician at The Nazareth Hospital, Israel (1983-90) and his career in Clinical Genetics really started there, a significant part of which was his long-standing research interest in the genetic basis of spine malformations and congenital scoliosis (inspired by looking after a very large affected family in Nazareth).
He has just been awarded his second research grant from the British Scoliosis Research Foundation (The BRSF) to continue more studies in this field in collaboration with the molecular geneticists in Exeter. The BSRF is the only research charity that exists solely to promote research into the treatment of scoliosis and allied health conditions in the UK.
Peter will therefore divide sponsorship money 50:50 between the Children’s Ward at The Nazareth Hospital (which is badly in need of upgrading and refurbishment) and the British Scoliosis Research Foundation.
