Story
After Gill was diagnosed, she was placed under the care of a multi-disciplinary team at The Conquest Hospital in St Leonards-on-Sea. As well as consultants in a number of specialisms, the team had as a member a Macmillan clinical nurse specialist (Gerard) who acted as Gill's point of contact within the hospital. This arrangement worked brilliantly and Gill knew that she could get in touch with Gerard at any time - nothing seemed to be too much trouble, no matter too trivial and no question too silly.
When Gill's hospital-based treatment came to an end, Gill was supported by a community Macmillan palliative clinical nurse specialist (Sarah), who co-ordinated the work of the relevant community-based professionals (GP, district nurses etc), provided crucial liaison with Gill's palliative care consultant, and gave Gill and her family psychological and emotional support. Sarah was a key player in the establishment of Gill's Hospice at Home facility.
