Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On 9th October 2019, my father passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer's. My father is a Retired Officer in the British Army, after serving in the Royal Corps of Signals, and loved the outdoors. He loved keeping fit and was highly independent in everything he did.
When my father was officially diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2016, as a family we had already seen a deterioration in his memory many years previous. His condition led to his incapability to perform every day tasks such as getting dressed and shaving. This took a lasting toll on my mother who acted as a full-time carer for three years.
It is extremely difficult to comprehend the negative impact of Alzheimer's until you experience it for oneself. Seeing my father's condition slowly deteriorate in full knowledge that there wasn't a cure was extremely tough to take. My father celebrated life and in turn this inspired and motivated me to actively do something about the disease.
This year, I have started to commute to work on my bicycle. When my father passed, I wanted to undertake a new challenge, doing something which would represent his spirit and determination in life. Cycling everyday, therefore, inspired me to undertake the Prudential RideLondon - Surrey 100 challenge for Alzheimer's Research UK, to attempt something that would make him proud and to raise money for charity in the process.
I pray that, one day, medical research will be able to prevent Alzheimer's taking hold of more lives like my father.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
