Story
Towards the tail end of last year - while doing a little show I may or may not have mentioned a few times - I was lucky enough to meet Daniel, an absolute lad, living and fighting with a rare form of childhood cancer named Rhabdomyosarcoma. We chatted about what he and his brother had gotten up to during the show, had an old school game of conkers, (I’ve still got them!) and swapped some proper gnarly space stories. Safe to say, if the Guardians of the Galaxy are ever looking for new members, I know a guy. The Nova Corps, though? Not so much!
Anyway, in a run that saw me living out childhood sci fi dreams and saving the galaxy every night, hanging out with Daniel and his family was an absolute hands-down highlight. In an effort to even the playing field, and with a ballot place for the 2023 London Marathon in my back pocket, I managed to get hold of Daniel’s mum, Michaela, who very kindly pointed me towards some charities that they had personally benefitted from. One of them was CHICS, a small charity that supports children with Cancer, providing days out, experiences and care to sick kids and their families. In their own words:
"CHICS helps to support the whole family of a child diagnosed with cancer, from diagnosis for as long as we are needed. We offer various events, theatre trips, parties etc to ensure all our families experience as much fun time as possible."
Childhood cancer rates are on the up in the UK, with around 1,800 new cases being diagnosed every year. These kids face having their childhood dominated by repeated hospital visits, aggressive treatments and long, unsteady, roads to recovery. However, with our help, CHICS can help these kids create core memories away from the hospital, to go on adventures, to spend time with their families, experience new things and allow them to experience childhood just how everybody should experience childhood - with no worries and a boundless thirst for adventure.
Please give generously, these kids have been dealt a really bum hand but they deserve the frigging world. Thank you, in advance.
