From Practical Action's website: HELP FARMERS LIKE ALFRED BEAT POVERTY Families in Gwanda are struggling to feed themselves from the food they grow on their farmland. Because of climate change, devastating droughts and flooding have become more frequent in the region. Crops fail and people have to rely on food aid to fend off starvation.Alfred is a 61 year-old farmer who lives in Gwanda. A clever combination of inexpensive solutions have helped him and his grandchildren beat poverty.
My Dad, Rev. David Post, cycled the length of Britain twice in his 70s to raise money for a cherished charity who dubbed him "The Pedalling Parson". Now in his early 80s,
Now in his early 80s, sporting a 'bionic' hip, and inspired by Captain Tom's extraordinary efforts, Dad wants to support three more of his favourite charities - Tear Fund, Christian Aid and Practical Aid - focussing especially on supporting victims of climate change.
Having been restricted to a 'stay local' travel ban, we bought my Dad a map with his house in the centre and suggested he try to stick to a 10-mile radius, thinking this would keep him busy for a few months till lockdown eased...He quickly devised a cunning plan to equal his Land's End to John O'Groats mileage (1029 miles - which, incidentally, doesn't include the miles it took to get from his home in Lincolnshire to Land's End and from John O'Groats back home...) and decided to make it count.
Concerned that his memory is starting to fade a little with age, Dad wants to do this before he forgets how to cycle home again (!) and we hope that you can support him in this long distance, locked-down adventure! He's already cycled nearly 500 miles since January 2021 so we've no doubt he'll hit the 1029 target. Keeping him within the 10-mile boundary is slightly more challenging, however...
You can choose which charity to support but we hope that the donations will share out as equally as possible between the three - aiming to give each charity a rounded-up £350. Just Giving can only give to one at a time so you will have to click them all if you want to donate equally.
We want to thank everyone who donates online or in person to Dad's cause and we hope that by the time the clocks go back in October, he will have raised at least £1029!
I will be managing the online fundraising site for Dad, and there will be no expenses at all, as Dad's on his bike! Helen Robinson
