5 Peaks Challenge

The weekend in the middle of June proved to be a tough one for many... On the evening of June 17th this year, a group of parents of children from Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Gymynedol Llantrisant in Miskin, a Welsh medium Primary School in Rhondda Cynon Taf, South Wales tackled two famous walking routes "with a twist".

The mums & dads (some with very little hill walking experience) walked Ben Nevis (the highest mountain in the UK, Scotland) then Scaffel Pike (the highest mountain in England), followed by Snowdon (the highest mountain in Wales).

It however did not stop there... from Snowdon they carried on to Cadair Idris (the highest mountain in mid-Wales) and then to Pen y Fan (the highest mountain in South Wales). This will effectively complete the National 3 peaks challenge, and the Welsh 3 peaks challenge, back to back!

Again it did not stop there... after completing these mountains back to back, and walking from the summit of Pen y Fan on Saturday evening towards the car park at the base, four individuals did not hang their boots there... they continued walking throughout the night from 10.55pm and into the morning towards the Primary School by 12.12pm the following afternoon!, some 34 miles south from this position: a walk that takes in most of the Taff Trail (a famous cycle route from Brecon to Cardiff).

The total walk covered approximately 47 miles, include over 5000 metres of ascent, and over 1200 miles of driving.  As if this was not "mad" enough, they carried a rowing machine to the top of each of the 5 peaks and rowing at the summit!

Some parents aimed to complete the whole event, some completed the peaks only.  Others enduried the Welsh 3 peaks and some tackled Pen y Fan: either way many parents will endured their own personal challenge to raise money for the PTA of YGGG Llantrisant and in doing so have helped their children.
