My Story - why the marathon?
My wife has type 1 diabetes and has lived with it since she was a teenager. She has been lucky - good control and an insulin pump have kept her free of serious complications so far. She is a fantastic wife, mother to our young daughter and my best friend and I can do something to make her future free of diabetes by raising funds for Diabetes UK.
In 2007 reality hit me in the face when, after tests and a visit to a specialist, I was told I had NASH and Metabolic Syndrome. I was told that if I didn't do something about it, I could very well end up with diabetes too. It was the wake-up call I needed. Being nearly 40 and not one to do things by half, I dreamed up "The 40 Feats".
Diabetes kills people - it kills them slowly and by masquerading behind other illnesses like heart disease. It reduces people's lifespan and can cause nasty complications like blindness, liver failure and leaves sufferers at risk of heart disease. 300 people are diagnosed with diabetes every day.
I need your help - every pound of sponsorship is one more reason why I have to keep training and have to finish the marathon. Running the marathon is a massive challenge.
You can follow my training progress here:
The Flora London Marathon forms part of my 40 Feats - I'm planning on completing 40 amazing endeavours to celebrate 40 amazing years of my life and to raise money for four charities - Diabetes UK, The MS Society, Cancer Research and The Samaritans.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Diabetes UK gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
