Every Single Day a Baby is Born Sick or Too Soon (Prematurely) at Kingston Hospital and cared for on our Neonatal Unit. We care for up to 18 babies at a time and last year cared for 600 tiny and precious babies. The aims of the charity Born Too Soon which was set up in 1985 are to make the experience of having a baby/babies cared for on our Neonatal Unit the best it can possibly be, by supporting families and also ensuring we have the most up to date equipment.

Replicating (Nature) the womb is extremely difficult and the equipment  very expensive. For instance an Incubator can cost anything from £15,000 to £35,000 and the associated equipment to make just one intensive care Cot Space costs an extra £30,000. Many babies need a breathing machine  costing £15,000 and Monitors costing £15,000. We currently have an appeal to provide one extra intensive care space in order that more babies can be cared for close to home and not have to transferred to another Neonatal Unit, which could be anywhere in London.  We aim to keep families together, close to home.

If we receive a £100 it would go towards the purchase of equipment or providing accommodation for families so they are able to be with their baby. It is really important for both the baby/babies and their families to be together where possible.  Every penny makes a difference.  Every baby is unique and depending on whether they are unwell or born prematurely can spend anything from 1 day to 200 days on our specialist unit.

Imagine your baby being born as early as  24 weeks which is 16 weeks too soon weighing as little as 450Grams (One Pound)   Also A baby being born on time but very unwell, because of infection, heart or breathing problems.

Born Too Soon also supports  Bereaved families and those with babies with  life limiting conditions, with our Community Nursing Teams.

If we get it right from the start, the effects can last a lifetime.  Our Babies that we care for every single day are our future tomorrow.
