Story
My challenge is to complete two of the hardest running events in the world - The Amazon Jungle Marathon and the Sahara Desert 'Marathon des Sables'. Both events will require me to run 'more than a marathon' every day for six days - in total 200k (125 miles) through the Amazon Jungle and 243k (151 miles) through the Sahara Desert. Each day I will be running for between 5 and 14 hours. (The longest stage is 87k (54 miles ) What makes these races extra hard (especially for Europeans) is the weather, the terrain and the fact you have to carry all your gear with you. The Jungle route is a mix of steep mountains, river crossings and swampland where temperatures will reach 100 degrees, humidity 110%, daily tropical storms and my rucksack will weigh about 15kg. The Sahara route is also surprisingly hilly, with day after day of energy sapping dunes to run up, temperatures reaching 120 degrees, sand storms and again a heavy rucksack.
I will be running over 1000miles in 'training events' (see my blog http://charity-grandslammer.blogspot.com/)
Of course I am doing this as a personal challenge (The big 5 0 is only a few months away !) which I expect to be life changing for me - BUT- I also want it to be life changing for others. I have committed 10 months of my life to doing this- BUT- want to raise enough money to be able to help those children that need help now.
