Story
I'm jumping out of a plane to raise money for an amazing charity called the Cavernoma Alliance. Most of you will be lucky enough not to have heard of Cavernomas but unfortunately one of my children suffers with this condition. It's a malformation of blood vessels in their brain. These tend to bleed irratically causing a whole range of side effects, similar to stroke like symptoms and of varing intensities. Every person suffers differently depending on the position of the cavernoma. Some have multiple lesions and one gorgeous little boy we have met has over 40 of them!
For our family, the initially diagnosis was as a result of a pretty terrifying ordeal with a ten day stay in intensive care at Gt Ormond Street for our then two year old. Side effects included the loss of movement in the eyes, paralysis down one side and various other scary things.
Once diagnosed, we realised how little was known about this condition and how few children suffered from it (thankfully!) But this also meant that we had nobody to turn to. Most GPs had not heard of it and nearly all subsequent visits to A&E have resulted in them having to look it up.
Finding the Cavernoma Alliance UK was amazing. Facts, medical contacts, support, research, forums and other events such as the new CaverFamilies events have opened up a far wider knowledge of this condition and ways to deal with it for many of us.
Nine years later and this is my chance to say 'Thank You'. Without their support and the wonderful people we have met, well.....
Please help us keep this charity running. They provide such an important role to the newly diagnosed and families of those suffering with this condition and we really need them.
