Story
Just over a year ago, I was out early one evening in York, when in the very spot that you can see in the above image, a rough sleeper wished me a nice evening. I was so touched by his politeness even in his situation, that I bought him and his neighbour a McDonalds.
This opened my eyes to the number of people sleeping on the streets that evening, and most evenings and I set about last winter looking at ways that I could help through the work of our charity, York City Fc Foundation.
We engaged with fans to collect warm clothing and purchased a large amount of sleeping bags to donate to a number of the charities around the City, many of whom work together, predominantly volunteer led, to be able to offer a daily provision of breakfast or evening street kitchens, outreach and support for the vulnerable and homeless in our wonderful City.
The Foundation does amazing work that we are very proud of, aiming to make a difference in our community using sport as a vehicle for change.
If our position in the community can raise awareness of the issues surrounding homelessness, as well as vital funds to continue our programmes and campaigning, and more importantly to be able to provide for the continuation of these frontline services, then we wanted to not only take part in a CEO Sleepout but also to host it.
So we are inviting local CEO’s to join us on Thursday 11th April to sleep out on the David Longhurst Stand, at Bootham Crescent, the home of York City Football Club.
I have been inspired to take part in the Sleepout myself and to raise funds personally to support the causes. I fully accept that this will be no mean feat as someone who up until now has considered glamping to be the closest to this experience. Whilst I openly admit to being daunted by the thought, that is exactly why I am taking on this challenge and why you should sponsor me!
Thanks so much for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page and I hope that you will be able to relate to my story and either sponsor me, or join me on the evening to take on the challenge.
Many thanks
Paula
