Story
On Sunday 14th October I will be running the Cardiff Half Marathon in aid of the Alzheimer's Society and in memory of my lovely Uncle Terry.
As you can see from the photo, he was a man who loved life and wanted to squeeze as much out of it as he possibly could. He loved being in other people's company and very often a short walk to the shops could take hours because he'd met someone and stopped for a chat! He was very sociable and enjoyed a good night out and a party. Family gatherings were many and often whether at the home he shared with my aunty or at another family members house.
Uncle Terry was interested in what other people had to say and was the correspondent for the local paper for years. He was always on the lookout for a good story or wanting to know what was going on in the community. If he thought something was unjust he would write letter after letter to the local press to put his point across.
He loved music and was a huge Bing Crosby fan, my overwhelming memory of him was on Christmas Day when by 10.30am he'd put a glass of beer in my hand and sing 'White Christmas', it always made me smile.
He was such an intelligent man and was the curator of Caerphilly Castle for several years. He loved talking to visitors about the castle and was so interesting.
Then, a few years ago, he began losing his memory, forgetting who he was, who my aunty was and the rest of the family. He'd regress to things that happened years ago and wouldn't know what was happening in the present day. It was so sad to see a man like him become that way. He eventually went into a home and his condition deteriorated. In July 2008 he passed away.
Another uncle, Lawrence, was recently diagnosed with dementia and went into a home. He has since died.
This terrible disease is heartbreaking, it doesn't cause pain to the person it's affected but it causes lots of pain to those related to that person. We think of Alzheimers as a condition that only affects older people, but there are people in their 40s who are also suffering.
Please help me raise money for the Alzheimers Society, funds raised can go towards research into this awful condition and will also help those who already have it.
