Story

Hi I am Nick Wheeler. I am a serving Police officer with the Hampshire Police and live on the Isle of Wight and am a son of Paul Wheeler Solicitor and member of the Vectis Sunrise Rotary Club on the Isle of Wight.

Charles will be accompanying Nick along the route, at 25 they are of a similar age and live a fit and healthy lifestyle. Although born on the Isle of Wight, Charles grew up in Devon but recently moved back to the Island to further his career in Customer Services and be closer to family. "I'm really looking forward to this trip and doing it for such a good cause feels rewarding, lets hope the weather holds out and is kind to us!"

The idea first was to have a challenge and adventure in the Summer hols. I enjoy running cycling and canoeing so which to choose. We came up with the idea of canoeing 168 miles down the Thames. We have made several canoe trips so far including crossing the Solent to Yarmouth. It was a long journey back to the Isle of Wight but we made it.

To add purpose to our challenge we are raising money for the Charity Roll Out The Barrel.

This is a simple concept to supply barrels with handles and rubber tyres to families and communities in deprived Countries. Instead of the women and children carrying heavy pitchers of water on their heads or dragging them along the ground miles to their homes they simply fill the barrel and roll it.

When they arrive home and empty the barrel they give it to their neighbour who does the same.

This  liberates the children so that they can go to School.

It liberates the women again to educate themselves or develop skills to enrich their lives.

Make no mistake this is a very worthwhoile charity which achieves so much more than the simple act of providing a barrel.

We would like to raise £500.This is enough to buy 15 barrels and liberate 15 families or communities.

We set out on Sunday 30th June from Cricklade and finish 118 nautical miles later on 13th July at Chertsey stopping at campsites along the way.

About the charity

NO woman or child (as young as 4) should be forced to walk up to 5 miles daily to collect enough clean water just to survive. Help us provide millions of ROTARY ROLLER BARRELS and water filters for clean drinking water, instead of carrying jerry cans or buckets. CLEAN SAFE WATER IS THEIR RIGHT!
