Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

In May of this year, together with friends, Derek Noble and Trevor Biddle, I shall be cycling a 750 mile (1,200km) route from Montpellier to Rome. The three of us last undertook such a challenge in 2005 when we cycled from Gillingham, Dorset to Madrid (see photo to the left). On that occasion we each chose a favourite charity to support, and we're doing likewise this year.

For several years I've been a keen supporter of the Wessex Neurological Centre's 'Smile4Rich' Appeal, and on this occasion I've chosen this very worthy charity to benefit from donations pledged in support of my efforts.

Derek will be riding for the Tuberous Sclerosis Association, and Trevor will be supporting the Alzheimer's Society, and our collective goal is to raise a minimum total of £6,000 for our chosen good causes.

We'll be setting out from Montpellier on May 19th, and hope to arrive in Rome on May 27th, meaning we'll need to cover and average of close to 85 miles (135km) per day - which will in turn mean spending around 6-7 hours per day in the saddle!

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: The Wessex Neurological Centre Trust (WNCT) gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please be generous with your support. Every penny will help the WNCT achieve it's ambition to provide enhanced care for patients or to fund research into a whole range of neurological conditions!

Thank you!

PS> I'm very grateful for the support of The Rotary Club of Guernsey who have generously donated sponsorship of £250 and expressed their wishes for us to "Have a safe trip". Many thanks!

PPS> A big thank you to Rangers A & FC committee for the small change collection they did at their annual presentation night while I was away on the ride, collected £106.00. Thank you also to the many family, friends and work colleagues who were very generous with their donations.

About the charity

The Wessex Neurological Centre serves a population of 3 million throughout central southern England & the Channel Islands. Having successfully raised £80,000 to provide a dedicated 'critical care' ambulance, and £145,000 to fund the creation of a Paediatric Video-Telemetry Suite (used to assess children with severe Epilepsy as to their suitability for life-changing corrective surgery), our latest appeal aims to raise a further £200,000 for our most ambitious project to date - the Fluorescence Enhanced Neurosurgery Appeal. Surgeons at the Centre perform vascular neurosurgery (to repair aneurysms, haemorrhages and the like), on hundreds of patients each year. By equipping one of the Centre's operating theatres with a new, state-of-the-art operating microscope fitted with the FL800 Fluorescence system, most of these patients will benefit. Fluorescence Enhanced Neurosurgery enables surgeons to clearly visualise blood-flow in adjacent brain tissue, reducing the possibility of either a recurrence of the bleed, or of a post-operative stroke.
