Fundraising for St Elizabeth Hospice
David Garnham (my Grandad) was one of my biggest supporters when it came to me running and came to lots of local races that I took part in to cheer me on. He would always ask about my training, was very interested in parkrun & was often someone to tell me I wasn't focused enough and would help steer me back on track.
Unfortunately, in August 2021 my Grandad was diagnosed with Stage 4 stomach cancer. At first it looked positive as he went through the radiotherapy and was frequently allowed back home or to stay with family. This was great as it made it incredibly easy to still see him regularly. However, towards the last months of 2021 it became necessary for my Grandad to stay in St Elizabeth Hospice on a more permanent basis, meaning that family weren't always able to visit him so easily.
The nurses and carers at St Elizabeth Hospice were brilliant with him, one of them in particular was very good with him. Their level of care, how quick they were to respond when my Grandad needed help, and their constant positivity, calmness and patience were in particularly very helpful and I'm sure made my Grandads last months with us that little bit more comfortable.
Sadly, on 28th December 2021, my Grandad passed away due to the stomach cancer. Up until his final day, the nurses and carers were excellent with my Grandad and would always go above and beyond. Therefore, I will be dedicating my marathon in Manchester on Sunday 3rd April 2022 to my Grandad & it would be great to raise some money for the nurses at St Elizabeth Hospice to help them with resources and equipment etc. so that they're able to keep doing such a brilliant job for future patients.
