Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am planning to complete the 2014 Prudential Ride-London Surrey 100 mile sportive on August 10th. Since the limit of my cycling prowess is a few work outs at the gym and some casual mountain biking around the Surrey hills this should be quite a challenge! I have bought myself a road bike and a full complement of Lycra gear (you really didn't want to see that, did you?!) and am trying to get fit enough to stand a decent chance of finishing the event before it gets dark...
Rather than just do the event for fun (!) I decided to do it for charity and decided on Coeliac UK, partly because we have benefited hugely from their help and support in dealing with Jacob of course. I also chose Coeliac UK though because they are a less high profile charity than many others, and I wanted to raise awareness of something other than cancer, children and other very worthwhile but already well-supported causes.
1 in 100 people in the UK live with coeliac disease - it is an incurable, life-long auto-immune condition, not a food allergy. Coeliac UK work to improve their experience of healthcare, ensure their gluten free diet is easy to manage and drive research which delivers new solutions to the problems of living with the condition.
The charity does this through:
- providing expert and independent information to help people manage their health and diet
- campaigning for better access to diagnosis and care and better access to food in and out of the home
- funding research into the nature of the disease and potential cures.
