I'm undertaking this 72-hole golf challenge not just to raise funds for a fantastic cause which helped save my life but also to raise the awareness of this fightable killer amongst everyone, and I urge any men reading this to go and get yourself checked out.
I am very fortunate. On 22 October 2019 I was diagnosed as having prostate cancer. I am truly lucky to be able to say that after successful surgery my consultant gave me the all clear in January and I am now cancer free. My family and friends have been tremendously supportive throughout these last few months and have kept me focused on my end goal of being the old me again and I am well on the way to leading my ‘normal’ (!?) life, albeit in a socially distancing kinda way!
Across the UK, Prostate Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer with 1 in 8 men having the illness, and 129 new diagnoses every day. Every 45 minutes one man dies from prostate cancer – that's more than 11,500 men every year. But with early diagnosis the 5-year survival rate for most men with local or regional prostate cancer is nearly 100%.
I’d had my PSA level checked annually for the last 10 years as it was slightly higher than normal when I turned 40. After being relatively stable throughout that time, in August 2019 it had jumped to 8.7 so the more robust tests started - examination, ultrasound and finally MRI. Within 3 months of my increased result the tumour had been removed and 7 weeks post-op I was back to work and celebrating my birthday.
The harsh prognosis was if I hadn’t had been tested I’d likely be dead within 8 years.
If you can spare some funds during these unusual times then Prostate Cancer UK is a brilliant cause, but moreover if you're reading this, please check yourself against the symptoms, get yourself checked or encourage the men in your life to do so.
Thanks again,
Paul
