Paul Phillips family story:
"On 9th April 2022, the final day of a family ski holiday our two sons were caught in an avalanche. Whilst skiing, on piste, they were engulfed in a wall of snow which was 200m by 150m. Our younger son Oliver, managed to free himself, then had to wait and watch the piste rescuers searching for his brother Thomas. Found within 10 mins of being buried, they managed to dig Thomas free from snow 2meters (6ft) deep. This took another 10 minutes, so in total Thomas was buried around 20 minutes. Our sons were taken by 2 teams of mountain rescuers to different hospitals for medical assistance, Oliver by rescue sled with back injuries, Thomas by helicopter after being found unconscious. Inevitable concern for broken bones & internal damage led to emergency x-rays, scans & tests for both of them. Amazingly they were physically unharmed & walked away from their traumatic experience.
The event has had a profound effect on our sons and the whole of our extended family who were with us on the skiing trip. The words "your sons are lost in an avalanche" are something we never want to hear again and still brings tears to our eyes and that horrible feeling in the pit of the stomach.
We are so grateful for the rescuers who came to their assistance and who used the word miracle several times. We are all aware that without their speed, dedication, experience & professionalism there would have been a different outcome on that day. Although this event occurred abroad the experience has made us realise even more how invaluable mountain rescue is to all who wish to enjoy the beauty and challenges of nature."
On 3rd September 2022 we are taking on the challenge of climbing the Yorkshire 3 Peaks. This is not the formal 3 Peaks Challenge; some of us will climb all 3 peaks but some may only manage 1 or 2 but it will be a challenge for every member of the team. So please provide the support and encouragement we need!
Please help us to raise funds for the Mountain Rescue teams who save lives, reunite missing people with their families and ensure injured casualties get the best possible treatment at the earliest opportunity.
