Story
I qualified to run in this year's London marathon and have decided to use the opportunity to raise some money for the Stephen Lawn memorial fund.
Steve Lawn was a colleague of mine at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine . He was a world leading figure in the world of HIV and TB research and lived for a number of years in Cape Town South Africa where much of his research was located.
Sadly Steve died last year from a brain tumour . Before his death, with his family, Steve set up the memorial fund in his name which aims to support and inspire the next generation of researchers working on reducing the burden of HIV and TB in Africa.
I only found out recently that Steve was also a keen marathon and ultra marathon runner , he ran the London marathon in 2014.
The Stephen Lawn Memorial Fund for TB and AIDS Research Leadership - has been set up to commemorate the life and work of Stephen Lawn. This will support a Lecture, to be given annually at the time of World TB day in London and Cape Town by a leading TB researcher, as well as a monetary prize for an upcoming researcher conducting promising work focused on reducing the disease burden of TB and HIV/AIDS in Africa. The fund will be jointly managed by the LSHTM TB Centre in London, the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease in Paris, and the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre in Cape Town.
