Paul's Great North Run 2017

Great North Run 2016 · 11 September 2016 ·
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My names Paul McCallion. In 2012 I was diagnosed with Crohns Disease, I was quite poorly during the back end of that year (excuse the pun).
For those of you who don't know what Crohns is, in a nutshell it's a condition which can affect your entire digestive tract, causing chronic inflammation, diarrhoea, pain and fatigue. It can cause loads of other unfortunate things, in my case I've suffered from all the above and also had good few operations to remove abscesses and fistulas which form when the disease is particularly active.
One of the common symptoms of Crohns is fatigue, and not just your usual "Ah, I can't be arsed with this" fatigue, but feeling absolutely shattered due to your body's inability to absorb the food you eat, as well as additional toilet trips. This then makes it even more difficult to find the energy to run...I was treated with an amazing drug called infliximab/remicade for 5 years to help manage my symptoms.
I have had a few bad flare ups this year and have recently (April 2017) been started on adalimumab/humira as unfortunately I developed an immunity to infliximab. All these drugs/biologics have improved thousands of lives for the better, and for me has enabled me to maintain my normal activities in life, including my fantastic job!
This is all down to the dedicated work by the Crohns and Colitis research team and my fantastic hospital team at the RVI in Newcastle upon Tyne. Working in a hospital I see the wide range of effects Crohns and colitis has on patients. I consider myself incredibly lucky!! For that reason I want to help.
Hopefully with your help (and money haha), we can fund more research and development into the treatments for this condition and one day, like all other medical research, find a cure! Thank you in advance for your help! Paul :) *
