We are fighting to make a world where diabetes does no harm

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit this page.

For those of you who we haven't been in touch with recently I'm running for Diabetes UK because we had a fairly eventful few days last October which have changed Emily's and our lives forever.  I casually mentioned that Diabetes UK had some charity spaces available for the Great Manchester Run and Sarah virtually forced me to sign up, which is why her picture is on this page too.

Following an ambulance trip at 2 in the morning last 19 October Emily spent 48 hours in a high dependency unit at Bolton hospital during which time we had to face the prospect of losing her.  As soon as we arrived at hospital the doctor could tell that Emily was diabetic and immediately started the treatment that saved her life.  If we had gone in any later it may have been too late.

I feel that if we had known even just a little about signs of diabetes, to raise this with the GPs we saw in the months leading up to this, the emergency could have been avoided.  This is largely why I want to raise money for Diabetes UK.  If more people know about these symptoms then other parents won't have to endure the 48 hours that we went through.

Emily is fine now, although she has type 1 diabetes and will need insulin injections for the rest of her life. She's now as crazy and full of energy as she was before diabetes, which makes me even more convinced that we could have spotted this much earlier.  The support we have had from the hospital, the diabetes team and Diabetes UK has been fantastic, and Emily and Sarah even got a trip to Lapland out of it last Christmas.
