We provide specialist nurses to support families affected by dementia

Story

I have decided to run the 2015 Berlin Marathon with my good pal Billy Mahoney and I've decided to use the event as a way to fundraise for Dementia UK. Originally this page was created to raise money for Dementia UK, a charity which is very close to my heart as my nan is unfortunately extremely ill with dementia, however I would also like to use this page and event as a befitting tribute to my grandfather.....a great man who selflessly spent the last 15 years of his life ignoring his own health and caring for his wife who has dementia!

My nan is a long term sufferer of Dementia and has recently been transferred from her home where she lived with my grandfather into a specialist dementia care home .  The illness is extremely straining and difficult for families to effectively manage, both financially and emotionally and has severe effects on all involved.

As some may know, my grandfather and mother were the main source of care for my nan, however carers regularly visited my nan's property to provide much needed support and social interaction for both grandparents. The level of commitment and dedication required by family members and support staff is exceptional, and without the care provided by organisations such as Dementia UK, my nan would not have been able to stay at home as long as she did.

Following my nan's 15 year battle with Dementia, my grandfather became her main carer and did his upmost to keep her at home with him where she belonged, however subsequently her needs became too overwhelming and she was moved into a permanent care home. My grandfather continued to visit my nan in her new home and found great pride and pleasure knowing that he had cared for her the best way he could and had placed her in a home where she was receiving high quality. Unfortunately, on 7th May 2015 my grandfather passed away following a stroke; he spent his last months ensuring that my nan was safe, settled and well at her new home and then peacefully left us. Ultimately the illness had as bigger affect on him as it did my nan, however he found peace knowing that she was in good care and being well looked after......something which Dementia UK strive to provide and support. I have had first hand experience at watching how this awful illness can remove ones independence and place immense strain on those diagnosed, but also their love ones.

I'm sure there are many stories similar to mine and people may have sponsored similar charities and events in the past, however it would be hugely appreciated if all of those who know me, or maybe those who have just come across my page by chance could sponsor me, regardless of the value and share my page. My entire family, both past and present would be hugely grateful for any donation and we would all like to thank you in advance for taking the time to read my page......please pass on and share my page to raise awareness of this great charity who offer a wide range of services which assist the sufferers and their families in successfully caring for and managing the illness.
