In April it will be two years since I started to have regular blood transfusions to keep me alive, this is as a result of contracting a bone marrow cancer known as Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). MDS affects the production of red blood cells, hence not enough Oxygen is carried around the system which makes me rather anaemic, the consequence for me is, now, weekly blood transfusion.
Thanks to Senior Sister Ali and her team of angels at Yeovil District Hospital I am not only still here but have a reasonable quality of life.
The thing is, transfusions can take between 6 and 10 hours. The chairs currently used are old and as a result of heavy use become uncomfortable after a few hours of sitting and therefore need to be replaced. I think the euphonism is “saddle sore” but I call it numb bum! There are some patients who, unfortunately, have to attend the unit on a daily basis.
The replacement chairs are rather expensive at about £1600 each;
from the nurse’s perspective they are very efficient, as well as being
much, much easier for the patient. It would not only show our thanks and appreciation to the NHS but in particular the transfusion team, plus an enormous physical relief for the patients, if the seven old chairs could be replaced with the new NHS approved Boston chair.
I know it is not the most exciting appeal, but just consider that at the moment, from the hospital and patients’ point of view, it’s like having surgery on an old kitchen table with rickety legs.
