Story
My wife gave up a great career to look after her mother Carole who suffers from dementia. Carole was as sharp as a tack and nothing could get past her. Sadly, when her husband Rod passed away Carole fell into a state of deep depression over her loss. At the age of 62 we noticed subtle changes in her demeanour. There were small but significant changes that concerned us enough to seek professional help eventually resulting in the diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia an uncommon type of dementia which affects the front and sides of the brain. This resulted in changes in her character, command of language and her ability to do basic tasks. We took the decision to move Carole in with us to offer her the best loving care possible.
It hasn’t been plain sailing and yes it has been stressful at times for sure but our love for her and one another is what binds us together. Carole is now 76 years of age and I am positive that the love, care and daily interactions with her have been pivotal to her longevity.
My wife has campaigned to open a local dementia resource centre in our local area. Giving up many hours of her valuable time when she is not looking after her mother. She has been successful in her plight and I am so proud of what she has achieved.
Now it’s my turn to put something back and that is why I have decided to do a marathon. We need to beat this terrible disease and the more money we can raise for much needed medical research the more chance we will get closer to wiping this out once and for all.
Carole no longer recognises us and anyone who cares for a loved one with dementia sadly gets to lose them twice.
Please help me to help others.
