Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
John O'Groats to Lands End by bike over 9 days was quite a challenge! We had to cover over 1,000 miles at an average of 115 miles per day and tackled some challenging climbs, such as the Kirkstone Pass coming out of the campsite at Ullswater and Longmynd in Shropshire, which was so difficult that only a few could manage it! I was not one of them!
I eventually made friends with my tent, but was grateful it only rained during a couple of days otherwise I would have been off in search of B+Bs.
I lost a spoke in my backwheel on a steep descent and had to use a loan bike, which was too small for me, for a couple of days, while a new wheel was located for me. The samaller frame caused knee problems, which thankfully resolved themselves once I got my own bike back.
But the biggest problem was a nasty bug which swept through the camp and resulted in many people, including me, having the runs. I had to complete the last two hot days suffering stomach cramps and having to pay frequent visits to quiet corners of fields along the way! In one such field I had noticed a slight incline in the form of a grassy bank but it was only mid squat that a passenger train came rattling into view to reveal that it was a main line!
It was a huge commitment, but I think it has been worth it as I have raised a decent sum for Phyllis Tuckwell, whose work is invaluable. Any further contributions would be most welcome.
