Story
After taking a couple of years off due to injuries, I am taking the 100 Wave Challenge October 23 to support Boys to Men Mentoring for the third time. This incredible program brings positive male mentorship to hundreds of at-risk young men in San Diego County. Boys to Men Mentoring is a San Diego based nonprofit, facilitating consistent group mentoring for fatherless, at-risk, homeless and disconnected teenage boys ages 12-17. Through strategic partnerships with local middle schools, high schools, and community partner locations, Boys to Men connects teenage boys with compassionate mentors who provide the encouragement, empowerment, and accountability they need to thrive. I've personally attended beach days, where these boys (some of whom have never seen the ocean) get to escape their challenging worlds for a day of surf, games, fellowship and encouragement
My father is now 93 and has stood by me through all of my ups and downs. I would not be the man I am today without his unwavering, unconditional love. Boys to Men also recognizes the importance of male role models and fills in the gaps for at-risk boys by surrounding them with a community of support and giving them the opportunity to reach their fullest potential. This incredible organization believes it's easier to build strong boys than to repair broken men. "Most of the social pathologies disrupting American life today can be traced to fatherlessness." _ Charles Colson.
I hope to be able to provide the finances for 5 boys to attend the program for a year by attempting to catch 100 waves in one day to raise $5000. After one hip replacement and contemplating another, it will be more difficult this year at age 61 to surf all day in pursuit of 100 waves. But it will be worth it, knowing the end result is life-transforming direction and encouragement to boys who may otherwise end up in jail, on the streets, or worse. Please consider standing with me and making a donation to my page to support these young men who are working to overcome adversity and become men we can admire.
