All We Can's ‘In Her Shoes’ Challenge · 14 May 2020

All We Can is an international development and relief organisation, working to see every person's potential fulfilled. We work through partnership alongside our global neighbours most impacted by disasters, poverty and injustice to enable flourishing and resilient communities.

Story

On Thursday 14 May I am completing All We Can's ‘In Her Shoes’ Challenge by walking 10km (about 400 laps) around my back garden , then cycle 10km (just 10 laps) round the block where I live.  Why?

I want to highlight those in other countries whose living conditions are much more difficult than my own, even without the restrictions imposed by COVID-19.

Take Nawalat, for example, a girl from rural Uganda who usually walks over 10km to school, which takes about two hours each way, every day.  Take a look at the video on

www.allwecan.org.uk/get-involved/fundraise/in-her-shoes-challenge/

which brings Nawalat's story alive.  She isn't able to travel to school during the current lockdown, but when she does, a bike would significantly reduce the time she spends travelling to and from school. In turn, this will make a considerable difference to her education and family life, helping to break the cycle of poverty.

All We Can's Emergency Coronavirus Appeal (allwecan.org.uk/coronavirus) has already helped provide regularly sanitised bicycles for girls like Nawalat and for others, including expectant mothers who can then reach health centres to safely deliver their babies, and also help families travel to markets for food and to support their livelihoods.
