Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

I will be cycling between all the 17 Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) sites.

Starting at Dounreay (June 28th), the route finishes at Sizewell after 17 days, averaging just under 100 miles per day (1560 miles total).

The trip will be undertaken alone, with a variety of accommodation at youth hostels, camping and B&B’s or hotels along the way. The route, mostly roads but some cycle paths, includes a range of terrain, from mountain scenery (GlenCoe, Loch Lomond, Lake District, Snowdonia) to rolling hills, coastal peninsulas and some nice flat sections. It will mostly avoid the big cities.

If anyone would like to join me for any of the sections of the route, please contact me; I would be very pleased for the company.

I am raising money for two charities, including Breast Cancer Care (this page). My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and following successful treatment has bounced back and is living life to the full.

Trip Diary

Day 18

The last day.
Langford (last night's B&B) - Bradwell (16th NDA site) - Colchester - Ipswich - Woodbridge - Sizewell (17th and final NDA site).
97 miles.
A wonderful finale to this trip.

The weather stayed fine and dry all day, the landscape is flat, no wind for most of the route, and good company for the ride. This is what cycling is all about !

I met Ian Findlay from Magnox Bradwell, at 8:30 - we had arranged to ride together for this final day. We rode down to Bradwell site making very good time. I found it motivating cycling with company and Ian (a fit cyclist) set a good pace for me, consequently we made very good progress through the day.

After Bradwell, up to Colchester (50 miles, the halfway point) where we found a good cafe and I had a pasta lunch.  I needed this, especially after not having a proper meal last night, nor a cooked breakfast. We met a huge cycling event - hundreds of cyclists riding in the opposite direction to us.

Then on to Ipswich on a small A-road (avoiding the busy A12). After Ipswich we rode to Woodbridge and met David Anstee from Canberra. The three of us completed the ride to Sizewell for the finish. Photographs and down to the beach.

So that's it.  17 days of cycling, 17 NDA sites and 1674 miles. It feels great to have finished it. Now I am looking forward to some relaxation at home, and getting back to work.

Thankyou to everyone for your support, which has been tremendous. Thanks today to Ian for his company and pace-setting, and to David for his company, hospitality and support with accommodation and transport at the end.
