Story
Patongo Youth Centre (PYC) is doing wonderful work with former child soldiers and other young people who were formerly abducted by the LRA during the insurgency in northern Uganda that lasted 22 years and ended only 6 years ago.
Many of these young people are still traumatised and missed their education, and need help to develop skills for the future. PYC provides trauma counselling; helps organise these young people into youth groups so that they can get support from each other and participate in group activities such as agriculture, village savings and loan associations (VSLA), income generating activities, sport, music, dance and drama; and provides valuable training on topics such as HIV/AIDS, alcohol and substance abuse, gender based violence and girl child education. A new centre recently opened and new activities will include literacy / numeracy training for those young peple who missed their education due to the war and vocational skills training in carpentry and joinery, tailoring, mechanics and metal work.
I recently volunteered at PYC, helping them prepare for the opening of the new centre. Any money you donate will be used to buy new equipment for the centre so that even more young people can be helped in this area. Even small amounts will go a long way.
