Story
This scholarship fund is being set up by the UK based education charity WORLDwrite in honor of Sadhvi Sharma who died in March 2021 aged just 39. The fund will provide annual paid internships for individuals interested in working with the charity and using film, TV and journalism to promote the best for humanity.
To start with, we will use Sadhvi's Memorial fund to sponsor two young people Hleb (age 25) & Vladlena (age 22) from Ukraine to come here and to work with us. Hleb worked with us for a year as a student and shot material for our film on 1917. When he went back to his family he was imprisoned in Belarus during the protests over rigged elections. Some of you helped with letters to get him out of jail. He then fled to Ukraine to avoid further prison time and has Ukrainian refugee status. Recently he has been forced to leave Ukraine with his Ukrainian girlfriend Vladlena due to the war. He is now stuck in Poland & desperate to get here. He has pretty good English and is a very talented young filmmaker. Our film tutor Rob Harris and his wife Claire are kindly going to house Hleb and Vladlena, but we need your help in order to provide them paid internships with the charity. We know Sadhvi would approve of our assisting this deserving and aspiring young couple and her partner Fredrik is very supportive.
More on Sadhvi.... In her early 20s, Sadhvi Sharma became a WORLDwrite volunteer. She helped develop and launch its film facility, worked on films in Ghana, the UK and India, became part of the staff team as volunteer coordinator and remained a vital member of the charity's management committee until her untimely death. Sadhvi's unfailing courage and commitment to the advancement of our common humanity saw her speaking up for modernization in Mumbai, challenging population control policies globally and campaigning for unfettered free speech and freedom in the UK. As an advocate of the most direct democracy possible Sadhvi believed in the capacity of us all to improve our lot.
This scholarship fund will assist individuals interested in following a similarly inspiring and fearless path by developing media skills as Sadhvi did, to share ideas with the world that will make it a better place for us all.
The amount we need to raise is ambitious but will allow us to provide for more than one paid internship and the overheads needed to support them. Sadhvi's husband Fredrik will match fund all we can raise here too.
Thank you so much for your help and support in making Sadhvi's legacy matter.
