I am sure you will be having a good cackle at the thought of me pounding the streets of Venice and probably think it much more my style to hail one of the delicious gondolieri...however, I do plan to run this and ask you very kindly to sponsor me in aid of Venice in Peril.

I know you are probably inundated with seemingly worthier causes, however, the sad truth of Venice is that if we don't act now this magical, ethereal city will not be habitable in 50 years time. That means our grandchidren and great- grandchildren might never see this extraordinarily beautiful place that has inspired poets, artists, sculptors and architects for hundreds of years.

What we can do about it is raise money for Venice in Peril who fund scientific research into the problems and are trying to find long-term solutions to the watery issues(!); they lobby for the long term defence of the City; and restore buildings, monuments and works of art.
