Story
As some may already know Eating Disorder awareness week is the 1st-7th March. Beat is the UK’s eating disorder charity. Their mission is to end the pain and suffering caused by eating disorders. These serious mental illnesses ruin and, too often, take lives. They are still many misconceptions surrounding Eating Disorders, many think it’s a weight disorder when in fact it’s a Mental Disorder with weight being a symptom in some cases. Only 8% of individuals who struggle with an eating disorder are clinically underweight. Many are refused helped for not meeting a set criteria. The most known eating disorder is Anorexia Nervosa the stereotypical view on this disorder stops individuals reaching out for help while also the criteria to receive help for this illness requires you to be a certain BMI in some areas of the UK (BMI is highly inaccurate representation of true body weight). Early intervention for eating disorders is critical for biting an eating disorder in the bud as this creates the opportunity for an early onset treatment to set up an individual for the best hope of recovery. These some other common forms of Eating disorders... Bulimia, Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), Binge Eating Disorder (BED), Other Specified Feeding and Eating disorder (OSFED) and Orthorexia. I want to raise awareness and money for BeatED as I personally think it’s crucial to create the opportunity for early intervention of these disorders to give the individual the best opportunity for life beyond their Eating Disorder.
