Story
The handsome fellow you see at the top of the page (Brian Packer) was a successful, Olympic boxer, who held the title of British Champion. He is also our champion grandad, dad and husband. Like many footballers and boxers, he suffers from Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which is a progressive and fatal brain disease associated with repeated traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), including concussions and repeated blows to the head. It is associated with the development of dementia, which Brian suffers from and the incredible June (his wife) carries the burden of morning, noon & night. We are walking to show that we are with our super-nan/mum as she battles every day to care for the man she loves despite the unbearable cruelty of it all... Brian won many titles in his career, but June has fought longer and harder than he ever did, and she deserves recognition for her caring over the past 40+ years, so we'll walk with her to raise her up and spur her on as the journey continues. Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
