Story
We have decided to come together to raise money and awareness of the tragic humanitarian crisis that Afghanistan is experiencing. Together we are taking on the challenge of walking a marathon along the towpath, from West Byfleet to Bushy Park and back. Although this sounds like an overwhelming journey, it is unparalleled to what the displaced Afghan families are going through every single day.
We have decided to support the Afghanistan Emergency fund of the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR. The people of Afghanistan have been living in conflict for over 40 years, with no signs of ceasefire as the fight continues to accelerate. Generations of families have not known peace. In the last year alone millions more families have been displaced, after fleeing violence in their home towns with nothing but the clothes on their backs. The UNHCR works on ground level supporting these displaced civilians with aid such as shelter, food and medical support; but the UNHCR relies on the generosity of donations alone to support these families in crisis.
It’s a privilege that we have the choice to make this journey, may we use this privilege to support those who are less fortunate. Our walkers have submitted a donation of £15, and thanks to the generosity of family and friends, throughout the journey we will be met by familiar faces volunteering their time and resources to keep us fueled on our expedition (let me know if volunteering in this way appeals to you and a location for your pit stop can be planned on the route!).
A special thank you to our walkers, who without their dedication it would not be possible to support the UNHCR with the funds they so urgently need.
The current walkers: Adam Cook, Adam Lomax, Ailsa Greaves, Amy Arthur, Becca Williams, Ella Foster, Elliot Worthington, Emily Devery, Gisella Cicero, Harry Binding, Helena Garland, Isabella Holden, Izzy Aungier, Jessica Cooper, Jezzie Hill, Lauren Rengger, Lucy Oslen, Millie Gray, Millie Jenkins, Niamh Wilson, Prem Woods, Ros Edgar, Ruby Ashton, Samantha Squire, Tom Gugic, Yasmin Vidis Humphries, Will Davies.
