Story
1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem in any one year. Oxfordshire Mind helps over 20,000 people with mental health challenges every year. They promote good mental health through the provision of high quality services and campaigning for positive change.
This season, OULC has chosen to support Oxfordshire Mind in all of the great work that they do to help open up the conversation about mental health. A statistic that really stood out to us when deciding what our target should be was that, between 2003 and 2013, 13,972 deaths were identified as patient suicides (i.e. where the person concerned had been in contact with mental health services in the 12 months prior to their death). This represents an average of 1270 patient suicides per year over the period (MHN, March 2016).
As a result, each OULC team (men's, women's and mixed) is aiming to raise £1270.00 over the season, with all proceeds going towards helping improve vital research and support for anyone affected by mental health.
Each team will be raising money through participating in many different lacrosse- and fitness-related activities:
- Men's: Running 1270km as a club over the holidays, as well as doing 1270 touches of wall ball each per week.
- Women's: Points allocated per training session (cardio fitness, strength & conditioning, stick skills), aiming to reach 1270 points overall.
- Mixed: Running 1270km as a squad over the Christmas holidays. Mixed will also be doing 1270 mins continuous running in Hilary Term, which the equivalent of is 21hrs 10 mins. Spread across the two mixed teams that’s 40 mins each of continuous running to reach the total. They will start the run at 05:00 on Friday 28th and end at 02:10 on Saturday 29th. Please help support the Mixed team as they run non-stop for 21 hours! Photo evidence to follow soon...
