Story

The Oswestry Bone Cancer Centre Appeal

This is an Appeal to help fund a new £2million Bone Cancer Centre at the specialist orthopaedic hospital, Oswestry, to treat patients in a bespoke care enviroment.

Background to the service

The Tumour Unit in Oswestry delievers a nationally specialised bone tumour service, one of only five in the UK, with a catchment area of nine million people. We also treat people with metastatic disease (where cancer spreads to other organs). The Tumour Unit is part of the Greater Manchester and Oswestry Sarcoma Service, and the Greater Midlands Cancer Network.

Why the new Centre is needed

We want to improve the Tumour Unit for our patients by providing a dedicated environment specifically designed for their care.

The new purpose built designed Centre will be near to the main hospital entrance and built to the highest standards. These much improved facilities will include en-suite rooms, treatment areas and a garden reflection space.

It will provide a modern state of the art facility in line with the Trust's vision to be the leading centre in orthopaedic care.

Rare but vital

Bone tumours and soft tissue sarcomas are very rare in occurrence and this means it is easy for them to go undetected. We work closely with family doctors to educate and train them in spotting abnormal swellings and ask that these patients are referred in order that we can diagnose and treat any problems. Additionally in treating metastatic disease, patients really need an extended range of facilities. As a specialist hospital, we have access to all investigations - CT, MRI, Ultrasound and bone scans plus soft tissue or bone sample biopsies.

Timescales

We aim to complete the new Bone Cancer Centre by January 2014
