Family Action has launched a fundraising appeal to help families who are struggling with food insecurity and other financial pressures as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Story

Oscar’s kindness and love of food

Oscar is 4 years old and has always had a passion for food! I have never met a child that eats so much so quickly and I have no idea where he puts it!

While I was walking Oscar to school, he asked me if we had enough food for dinner tonight.

I thought this was a bit strange as he normally asks what we are going to have for dinner rather than if we have enough food.

I said yes of course we have, what made you ask that?

Oscar said he heard me talking on the phone saying that some
families couldn’t buy food for their dinner tonight.

He overheard me talking to one of my colleagues at Family
Action who was telling me about families who are struggling to feed their kids as they have lost their jobs due to a lack of business caused by coronavirus and can’t afford to buy any food shopping this week. That’s if they are lucky enough that their local shops has any food left…

With the shelves in all supermarkets nearly empty, can you
believe that some twisted individuals are bulk buying food and selling at three times the price? There was even one person selling formula milk for £40. Over four times the price of what it would cost in a shop. How can people take advantage of others like this? Especially when it involved young children and babies.

I explained to Oscar that we have enough money to buy some
food for tonight but some mummy’s and daddy’s don’t have jobs anymore and food is expensive to buy.

What he said next really moved me and brought a tear to my
eye.

‘Daddy, you know the money I have in my penguin jar that I
have been saving for our holiday, (his penguin version of a piggy bank), can you give that to a family so they can buy some food for their dinner’.

So after school today, Oscar has counted his pennies out,
convinced Esmae to hand over her piggy bank then asked if I was going to give some money as well! I don’t think he realises the money in the piggy bank was mine originally!!

Oscar had £20.67

Esmae had £10.24

I asked Oscar how much he wanted to raise in total. He said £100,000!!

I love his wishful thinking!

So I have created a Just Giving page for Oscar to reach his target (slightly less than £100,000!) and help provide dinners for as many families as possible.

So empty your piggy bank, donate what you would have paid for a coffee this morning, what you would have spent in the pub tonight, or the cost of your cinema tickets and meal out over the weekend. Or whatever you would have been doing if you weren’t stuck at home because of coronavirus.

We are raising funds for Family Action who are providing practical, emotional and financial to thousands of families across the country that are struggling from the unusual circumstances and financial difficulties that coronavirus has put them in.

Every penny you donate will make a significant difference to supporting families that have found themselves in this very unusual position that coronavirus has put us all in.

Most of all, it will help to put food on the table for families to have their dinner, just as Oscar wanted.

Oscar, you are a good little sausage!!
