Worldwide about 143 million children struggle to survive without a family of their own. Most of them are orphans, Various tragic situations prevent the biological parents from raising their children.

Although the perfect situation for every child is to be raised in a loving home, the real facts are that millions of children are growing up in group housing environments, such as orphanages, baby homes, children's shelters, rehabilitation children's centers, or on the streets. They are removed from society and far too few of them have a happy end. Only those children adopted by stable families are insured of assistance if they develop severe psychological problems. With stars like Angelina Jolie and Madonna adopting children from other countries, the glamorization of Hollywood masks the general awareness needed to help provide for remaining orphans.

The number of children in institutional care is significantly higher than the official statistics indicate.

• * Currently 143,000,000 orphans throughout the world spend an average of 10 years in an orphanage or foster home.
• * Approximately 250,000 are adopted annually.
• * Every year 14,050,000 children age out of system. In other words, they are forced to leave the orphanage or foster home with no place to call home.
