COVID-19 has had a dramatic impact on our lives in 2020 and has altered the way we communicate, connect and interact as a society. With it, new conventions have been created along with new rules and behaviours that would have been unimaginable a year ago. It’s the new normal.

Frustrated by the restrictions imposed by lockdown, and the impact lockdown has had on creative performers and crew, singer/songwriter Kitty Coburn brought together an incredible team of creatives from West-End Theatre and film to bring this version to life. The video is choreographed and directed by Michael O’Donnell (director of West End’s Lion King and former New York City Ballet dancer) and stars two furloughed leading West End dancers Fransisco “Chico” Lins and Darcel Osei. It was filmed in a social bubble by leading videographer DOP Neil Gordon. It was edited by Kitty herself. The music track was recorded as live, and features Guy Pearson on piano.

The stunning visualisation and choreography centers on the story of a young man and woman whose fledgling relationship is restricted by the rules that have been imposed on us.

The ‘social dis-dancing’ featured in the music video pulls together some of the ‘new normal’ movements where the handshake has been replaced by an elbow greeting, hugs replaced by virtual hugs, and kisses replaced by air kissing. Masks, shielding, lockdown, quarantine – people are close to each other but shouldn’t touch. The choreography is set to an ethereal cover of Duran Duran’s 1980s hit, ‘Ordinary World’. Although written over 30 years ago about a relationship, the song has a poignancy that reflects today’s new world with a hook line that asks, “Where is the world that I recognise? Gone away” - a sentiment that is shared by many people, young and old, across the globe as we navigate our way in this new world.

Covid19 has separated families from their loved ones and challenged  NHS staff in a way they have never experienced before. Isolation and fear, while putting their own lives on the line to care for the most vulnerable in our community, has affected both staff and patients. With your support the Royal Free Charity can be there to support  staff and patients nationally, supporting them physically, emotionally, and practically. Every gift will bring a smile and hope, just when it is needed most, and for the millions of people in the hospitals serve that means everything.
